Ok Gentlemen..I need your help here!

I have a near mint all original '71 Super Reverb running the orig CTS AlNiCo's, NOS Sylvania 7581A's and a Sylvania GZ34.
Plate voltage around 465vdc and bias set around 39ma.

This thing is crazy loud/powerful and breaks up like a monster! Which I like!

Yesterday while thumbing thru a Gerald Weber book, there was a simple mod that entailed disengaging the reverb pan and running a 470K resistor between the RCA jacks so one can use the Reverb pot as a gain control.

Holy Shit!!!!  This mod really adds some balls to an already over-the-top ass kicker.

So I'm enjoying this mod, but then realize I may be pushing these speakers beyond there limits. The CTS's are in great shape but I sure don't want to blast them into oblivion.

Sooooo......I'm thinking maybe I need something that will take all this umphhh.

Would going with 2 higher power ceramics plus 2 of the orig AlNiCo's help prevent an impending nuclear event, or should I go with 4 new speakers that are rated higher than these CTS's?

The Chicago Vintage and the reg Vintage 10's looked pretty nice.....1.5' VC models.

Thoughts anyone?  I know someone or all will ask "Well, what tone are you looking for?"  Tight low end, good punch/crunch and break-up a lot later than what's happening now....which is happening at about 4 on the Vol knob!!! :>)

What about these new Neos?......I know nothing about them...never heard one.

Thanks in advance all!

Hmmmm....I dont know that mod, but you may not be pushing them any harder than using an OD would. The quad will take a lot. Worse case scenario is Orange County will recone for about $50..... If you can handle the weight then a ceramic or two would help I suppose.... but will that really save the remaining two?

Yea, will it save the stock 2? That's my question.

Doc Robert, I read that post.  Weight.  Even with the CTS AlNiCo's it is a heavy monster...but it stays in the basement.
The Weber Neo are intriguing. Probably less or same weight as the CTS.

I do have a spare set of '76 SR CTS AlNiCo's from a past rebuild.  Guy that bought that amp didn't want them...so i got to keep them.

Thanks for your comments.

Any others to chime in?

If it was me I would be tempted by the Weber neos as well if only to see what they sound like and how they perform...... then I might be able to take the amp out of the basement.... anim32

Regarding this amp.. we, typically, advise guys to get 2x 10F150 and 2x 10A125's... unless you want all of the same and then we tell guys to go with the CTC10's

I have a NeoMagger bought !  It is in need of some repair (thus, not having to take out a second mortgage on my home, or sell a child).. these things run $30k + on the used market !

Anyway, I am continuing to test our various neo structures and feel close to having some neo options again. The company that I purchased the magger from is allowing us to come (2+ hrs away) and mag speakers from time to time until we get up and running. I plan on taking a bunch of 'testers' up there later this week. I hope to have good news on the front page of the site in the next month  anim32

thanks guys !

I too own a 71 SR but the original CTS all need recone, my amp has a ss rectifier mod so more power and tighter punchier bass which is why the CTS are bad!

I have 2 Reverend 1030s on the bottom and several revolving different 10s on top i use some ceramic and some old alnicos.

Btw, the 7581 will deliver max clean power as you know and maximum bottom end punch as well, i would lean towards c10q or c10n style ceramics, stay away from most alnicos unless they have huge mags and big vc's for headroom plus dial that mid knob all the way down for more clean headroom.

I run RCA Blackplate 6L6GC with this amp biased around 55% but i use a variac setting the wall supply at 105-110 so its less loud and a bit smoother overall, lowers the plate volts too.

If you variac your amp down you can easily run 6L6WGB Sylvania too, i wouldnt think you need a ton of headroom in a basement with those 7581!! Color Face

Just did an A/B with my BFSR yesterday now that I have an extra 4 x 10 cab. Previously I've been in love with my CTS Alnico's, although I put one 10F150 in with them. I tired the CVC10f's Ted made for me against them yesterday and gotta say, those CVC10f's are wonderful for the Super...
