Planning the next build from old pine shelving, recently got a couple of 10" weber sigs, so thinking about a tone ring cab, triangled de tuned or a 2 x 10.  So wondering about how a tone ring cab vs a detuned might sound?  Powered by old se 6L6 or se el 84.  BTW why are there so few 2 x 10 cabs?  Thanks

My experience has shown me there is no sonic difference between the two types. They do the same thing, just in different ways. I was a little disappointed in the tone ring cab after all that work to build one! The coolest 2x10 I ever had was a tweed Super with the angled front. Sounded great and really spread the sound around.

When you state an "angled front" orientation, are both speakers angled in the same plane, or both speakers mounted in a "V" configuration? I would think the "V" would give better coverage, but never have heard this setup. If in a "V" config, are the speakers mounted inside the "V" or outside an "inverted /\" ?

sold the cab, so I don't have any sound clips.  Ended up making it totally closed.  BIG sound that you can hear all the way across the stage

Thanks, Dr. Robert. Your work is always excellent. But about that last amp you built?

I would think the reason 2x10 stand alone cabs are so few in number is that if you are going to make a cab/head amp configuration then going for a larger speaker was the preferred choice. moves more air and without the amp chassis and heavy transformers of a combo it was no real burden to use larger speakers whicvh weigh more than tens.

There are no shortage of 2x10 combos however as this was a good compromise between weight and how much air you could move with two speakers and still have a relatively compact package.

Probably 2x10 cabs are somewhat overlooked as an option other than extension cabs to mate up with a 2x10 combo.

Seems to me there were plenty 2x10 speakers for PA back in the day but I might be wrong... those would use a more wide range speaker , maybe with a center mount tweeter or in conjunction with a set of tweeters for high range and maybe woofers for bass for full range repro of sound unlike instrumental amps where you were looking for something more tailored to the instrument.
