I'm looking for someone with Maximatcher near SE Michigan to match some pairs of Tungsol 5881 tubes for me.  I have about 50 of these. Anyone know who does matching, or what cost might be?  Thanks----Dave

why  not get a bias probe and do it yourself?, th e only possible reaon behind wanting to match these all would be to sel lthem so spend the 100 and make a thousand

A bias probe will allow you to match them for current draw, but not for transconductance.

Insert Quote
"A bias probe will allow you to match them for current draw, but not for transconductance." Not being funny (I genuinely would like to hear some experiences on the matter), but how important is it to match by transconductance, for guitar amp use? When I have matched tubes by ear, they are matched by plate current, whether they are matched by transconductance...I really don't know as I don't have any means by which to measure that. Maybe, they have coincidentally matched by that perameter, though it would seem unlikely?

In the past where I have specified certain pairs/quads from a vendor, pairs with the same current rating, but slightly dissimilar transconductance ratings still sound matched.

I agree with you Mark. I was just offering up a possible reason the OP was seeking the Maxi.

The amp does not see transconductance. It does see current draw.
Idealy you want both parameters to be as close as is reasonable, but the important factor is current draw.
Let your ears be the judge and don't get too wrapped up with numbers.
