I used a Dr. Z EZG-50 amplifier head, and an USA custom Strat (Alder Body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard) with Don Mare "Night Flyer" pickups. 12" Neomag, 8 ohms, cloth surround, paper dome - in Pro reverb cab 12" California, Ceramic magnet, paper dome, 8 ohm - in Pro reverb cab JBL D-120 F. Reconed, with who knows what parts, in 1987, metal dome, cloth surround, 8 ohms. Hey Dr. Bob, You've got to turn up the volume to hear my commentary. It's because the recorder (Zoom Q3) was set to low-sensitivity so as to not distort from the (much louder than my voice) guitar sounds.
The Q3 recorder has an auto-gain level setting mode. That would have helped in terms of hearing my comments... but I dislike the associated compression since it is not true to the actual sound.

The JBL seems to be the least coloured of the lot and, no surprise here, my ears gravitate towards the California. The Neo seems more... it seems fatter, yet at the same time brighter than the JBL - but I guess that could change with some breaking-in.
I do see why you like the Michigan, though. It's kind of smokier and deeper in a soulful, jazzy kind of way. Kind of sniffing up the alley of a Fane in terms of response, not counting breakup and overtone content.
Great of you to share this curved cone lineup with us, Paul. The recording could do with a few dB more in volume, though. Did you normalise it? Volume is on full everywhere but I can unfortunately barely make out your commentary.

O.K., I edited the file to bring-up the dialog and cut out some dead air. By the way, I was using a Dr. Z EZG-50 amplifier head, and an USA custom Strat (Alder Body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard) with Don Mare "Night Flyer" pickups. 12" Neomag, 8 ohms, cloth surround, paper dome - in Pro reverb cab 12" California, Ceramic magnet, paper dome, 8 ohm - in Pro reverb cab JBL D-120 F. Reconed, with who knows what parts, in 1987, metal dome, cloth surround, 8 ohms. In Princeton reverb cab Weber Michigan, 12", 8 ohms ,ceramic magnet, paper dome, in a J-Designs 1x12 cab (semi open back) Here is the new link to the edited file: http://www.seanet.com/~pauls/Jbl_ish_speakers_and_Mich_edited.mp3and the timing: JBL 0 -> 0:49 Neomag 0:50 ->1:16 Cali 1:28 -> 2:20 Mich 2:28 -> 3:30 JBL 3:35 -> 4:06 Neomag 4:10 -> 4:49 Cali 4:50 -> 5:52 Neomag 5:55 -> 6:18 JBL 6:20 -> 6:44 Mich 6:45 -> 8:10 JBL 8:16 -> End

The 150B speaker I know very little about, except it being a Jensen-type speaker with a British cone. Would be nice to hear one some time... ;)

Paul thanks for the clip-it is very informative. I, for one, would love to hear the comparison of the Neo and the Cali and the 150s. Waiting eagerly.................

great demo! really shows the strengths of each speaker; just pick a flavor that works.
pula58, my only question is on the efficiency. you said the JBL was the loudest, but can you give us a general idea of how loud each one was relative to the others?
(slight OT: man, the zoom Q3 sounds AMAZING; hopefully it'll lead more folks to record their rigs. waiting for mine to show up :).)

It seems to me that the JBL is the most efficient for sure. The Michigan, so far, seems the least efficient
and the Neomag might be slightly more efficient than the Cali.
The thing that is a little confusing is that the volume of all the speakers (except the JBL) seems to be getting a little louder as the speakers break-in. Is that possible? Or, is it just a psychological effect. You know, the dreaded A/B-itis.
update: I am actually not sure if the Neomag is louder than the Cali. Sometimes the Cali seems more efficient than the Neomag
