Giving credit where credit is due:  I heard this from Jack Petersen when I was a grad student at North Texas State in the early '80's:

Music is comprised of Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm.

Using the elements of Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm, we can set up the following formula:

Melody (1/3) + Harmony (1/3) +  Rhythm (1/3) = Music (3/3)

The formula for RAP is:

Melody (0/3) + Harmony (0/3) + Rhythm (1/3)

Therefore RAP is 1/3 music.

And it replaced talent with vocoders and overactive pitch correction.

I always thought that once something gets overused it stops being cool after a while. Nope! 1998 was the world's unofficial introduction to Autotune with Cher's song and it hasn't slowed down in TWELVE friggin years but has increased instead. And doofuses like Kanye prance onstage (badly) as if they're God's gift to coolness. Somebody explain that to me please! And while we're on the topic, how can the Faux hawk, keffiyeh, and shutter shades stay "cool" for so long? Doesn't anybody get tired of the same old thing? Get a clue...

oh well i remember when rock music and wide leg pants and long hair was bizarre new stuff that our folks thought was the end of musical quality. then it was disco then punk then new wave then alternative and rap, after that i lost track. emo and screamo?

it's all marketed as a rebellion against the previous generation's tastes so the kids would get into it.

Emo and Screamo? Sounds too much like Heckle and Jeckle.

It's definitely time for a change (of pants).  Bring on that new form of rebellion.

I can't wait...

Whatever happened to the boot flare jeans ? they fit over all kinds of boots well though maybe not Fabiano Mountain Boots good to fifty below which really needed the old style bell bottom like navy work pants ( my Madewell jeans bells are too small for me but I did find a gal who could wear them and looked good in them ).
Bring back the real boot flare and not the " relaxed fit " straight leg jeans that are now replacing them , though they are sort of more like the jeans James Dean or Marlon Brando jeans popular in the fifties.....  Thinking

At least we aren't reviving the Beatnik black turtle neck and pants style...... well not yet and maybe only in a certain crowd who like that style....  anim63

I used to wonder why rappers all went by stupid stage names.   Then I finally realized... they KNOW rap music is a joke, and they want to walk away scot-free when the general public finally realizes how bad rap music is.
They can start using their real names, and immediately disassociate themselves from the cesspool of 'rap'.
I guess they learned a lesson from the Bee Gees, a talented group who became the poster boys for all that was terrible in disco music.
